OTPs are commonly used by legitimate businesses and organisations to verify users, such as when requesting a password reset for a website.

OTPs are usually six-digit codes sent by text message. Your mobile may have an autocomplete function that allows you to easily copy and paste the code without leaving the website. 

Criminals attempt to trick you into providing them with an OTP after clicking through a fake text message, advert, or QR code unknowingly.

Criminals exploit the autocomplete function on your mobile. They send an OTP, which your mobile prompts you to paste it into a field they have set up on a fake website. They then use this information to make a fraudulent Apple or Google Pay enrolment. 

Always read the accompanying text message, as it tells you the purpose of the OTP and any potential risks associated with it. Including warning you if you’re activating Apple Pay or Google Pay.
