So many types of mortgages!

There may seem to be lots of different types of mortgages available, but basically there are just two. And the main difference between them is how you repay what you've borrowed. It's your mortgage, so you choose from:

  • repayment - where your repayments cover the capital and interest
  • interest only - where you repay interest only during the mortgage period and make additional investments elsewhere, for example in an ISA, pension or endowment, in order to repay the capital at the end of the mortgage period

There are advantages and disadvantages with both types - and different products within each type. Your choice should depend on you and your needs.
