Bankline ISO20022 FAQs

We will provide an update with further information on when support for MT format payment imports will end. These formats can continue to be used by customers for the time being.

However, as MT formats are being replaced by MX formats across the industry, and with no provision for enhanced data fields in MT message types, it would be prudent to plan to migrate to an alternative format (ISO 20022 MX based or Bankline CSV) by November 2025.

Some customers may find they need to switch from MT messages earlier. For example if you are making certain property related CHAPS payments then from May 2025 you will need to supply an appropriate purpose code, and the MT message format has no field to supply this in.

Customers can provide like for like data in ISO 20022 MX formats for Faster Payment imports today, however enhanced data will not be supported for Faster Payments at this time. We will provide notification to customers when this will be supported.

Payments that do not have a requirement to include enhanced data can continue to be imported using other import formats while they remain available for use. We also intent to extend our CSV format to accommodate enhanced data that is to be made mandatory. So whilst you don’t have to move to ISO20022 formats they are likely to offer benefits that cannot be provided via the CSV format.

ISO 20022 delivers a common language and model for exchanging payments data across the globe, provides richer and higher quality information than current messaging standards and better enables future innovation and development in the UK payments ecosystem.

Bankline customers can adopt ISO 20022 MX formats today for all import payments. Enhanced data for SEPA Credit Transfers became available from 17th March 2024, all other payment types are currently like-for-like with other import file formats. Enhanced data for CHAPS payments will become available from year end 2024 with other payment types to follow based on industry timelines.

TIP: If you are looking to adopt ISO20022 PAIN001.001.09 for the first time, you may want to wait until our November 24 specification is available as some data is being move to alternative tags to allow us to maximise the benefits of ISO in the future. Payments imported using the March 24 specification will remain supported.

Business and corporate customers will submit Customer Credit Transfer Initiation pain.001.001.09 format import files.

From 1st May 2025 purpose codes will be mandatory for CHAPS property transactions, at this time they will remain optional for any other CHAPS payments made by Business and Corporate customers.

From November 2025 purpose codes will be mandatory for ALL CHAPS payments.

From 1st May 2025 LEIs can optionally be included for CHAPS payments made by Business and Corporate customers.

From November 2025 LEIs will be mandatory for ALL CHAPS payments.

Hybrid or fully structured addresses will be available for CHAPS payments from year end 2024 and usage is encouraged. These will become mandatory from November 2025 for ALL CHAPS payments when fully unstructured addresses will no longer be supported.

Hybrid addresses will require the use of structured town and country fields while other address elements can remain unstructured.

Financial Institution customers will submit FI to FI Customer Credit Transfer pacs.008.001.08 and Financial Institution Credit Transfer pacs.009.001.08 format import files.

From 1st May 2025 purpose codes will be mandatory for CHAPS payments between Financial Institutions and for property payments, at this time they will remain optional for any other CHAPS payments.

From November 2025 purpose codes will be mandatory for ALL CHAPS payments.

From 1st May 2025 LEIs will be mandatory for CHAPS payments between Financial Institutions or where a party to the payment (e.g. Debtor, Creditor etc.) is an FI, at this time they will remain optional for any other CHAPS payments.

From November 2025 LEIs will be mandatory for ALL CHAPS payments.

We have started to introduce ISO 20022 based reporting into Bankline with individual Camt.054 Debit and Credit advices available from the Original Bankline Payment Advice screens. And we plan to increase the level of detail provided in these advices in the future.

  You will ll need to be in the Original Bankline screens.

• Once in Original Bankline, click ‘Account information’ on the left-hand side menu, and go to either:
• ‘View statements’ and select the account and dates you wish to view
• Or ‘View account balances’ and click on ‘Search Transactions’ for the account and dates you need
• Take a look under the ‘Payment advice’ column, and you’ll see ‘View’ if there’s a payment advice available for that individual entry.
• After you click ‘View’, you’ll be able to see the option ‘Export Camt.054’ to the bottom right of the screen, which will export the payment advice as a Camt.054 xml file.

We will be investigating the best way to incorporate the enhanced data that MX messaging makes available into Bankline’s screens, PDF’s, and other exported outputs.

There will be no change to the content of statement downloads from Bankline. LEIs, purpose codes and structured addresses submitted in outbound payments will not be included in statement downloads, regardless of format.
