Our Foundation bank account

Our straightforward basic bank account

With a Foundation account, you can handle payments and manage your finances in one place.

There’s no extra credit check on this basic bank account. So, it might help people going through bankruptcy or in need of a bank account but have a poor credit history/low credit score.

You can’t directly apply for a Foundation account. If you apply for another NatWest bank account but are not eligible, we may offer this no-fee Foundation account to you. Or, if we feel it’s a more appropriate bank account for your needs.

There’s no overdraft, interest or charges applied to this account.

Feel free to explore all our current accounts to see what you could apply for.

How does our Foundation account work?

A bank account for low credit scores. Our Foundation account is much the same as a regular current account. But it’s designed for people with a poor credit history.

Simple money management. You can pay in and withdraw money with our basic bank account. You won’t be able to access a cheque book, overdraft or credit card.

Contactless debit card. Buy things online and in-store using the money in your account.

No extra charges. A NatWest Foundation account won’t charge monthly fees or added interest.

What does a Foundation account come with?

This fee-free bank account could give you the access to banking you need, especially if you’ve got a low credit score, have been declared bankrupt, or don’t qualify for other bank accounts. Here are some other ways a Foundation account could help you to bank confidently.

Pay via contactless debit card

You’ll get a contactless debit card for quick, easy payments and cash machine withdrawals.

Just remember that you’ll need money available in your account to use this card.

We also offer a handy emergency cash feature. Contact us if your card gets lost or stolen and we’ll send you a code to withdraw the money you need from our cash machines – without your card.

You need to have the money in your account, at least £20, and we’ll ask some security questions so we’re sure it’s you.

How a Foundation account is opened

A Foundation account can step in if you’ve been struggling with money and are turned down for a regular account.

Here’s how you could get a Foundation account:

1. Apply for a NatWest bank account

You can’t directly apply for a Foundation account. When applying for another NatWest current account, we’ll let you know if we need to offer you a Foundation account instead. We’ll give you the choice of whether to continue.

2. Understand why we’ve offered a Foundation account

You may be offered a Foundation account if:

  • You have little or no credit history and/or a low credit score.
  • You’re going through a bankruptcy. Foundation may be your best option for a bank account if you’re declared bankrupt.
  • You give us incomplete or inaccurate information when applying.

Compare our range of current accounts

You’ll only be offered a basic Foundation account if you’re not eligible for our other bank accounts. We have a wide range of current accounts to suit different needs.

Our Select everyday current account

Our Select account is a simple bank account for day-to-day money management.

  • Monthly fee-free banking.
  • Take care of your bank account on the go with our mobile app and Online Banking. Criteria apply.
  • Pay however you like with Apple Pay, Google Pay™ and contactless. Limits apply.

To apply, you need to be 18+ and a UK resident.
