Top tips to make a strong password

Password fraud occurs when fraudsters use your password to gain access to your accounts without your permission. This can result in identity theft or financial loss.

Follow our top tips to make a secure, easy to remember password.

  1. Mix it up: use three random words or a memorable phrase. Add some capital letters, numbers, and special characters to strengthen the password. For example, ‘$ealGl4ssExc!tment’.
  2. Make it hard to guess: ‘123456’ and ‘password’ are easily guessed. Personal information like yours or your kids' birthdays, names, phone numbers and addresses are also simple for criminals to find.
  3. Use a long password: longer passwords are more difficult to guess. Use at least eight characters.
  4. Set up biometrics: visit My Security Profile in the help section of our Mobile App to sign up.

How to keep your passwords safe

Follow these tips to keep your accounts secure.

  • Use different passwords for each account: some websites have weaker security and could breach your data to fraudsters. If all your accounts use the same passwords, then fraudsters get access to everything.
  • Enable two-factor authentication: this adds an extra level of security by requiring a second form of verification, such as a code sent to your phone, in addition to your password.
  • Avoid sharing or writing down your passwords: your information could get in the wrong hands. You can use a secure password manager to help you keep track.
