Ticket scams

Top tips to stay safe

Top tips to stay safe

Criminals are using social media and online marketplaces to target people trying to get their hands on tickets for the latest concert, festival, or sporting event.

Follow our top five tips before buying tickets:

  1. Trust your instincts: if a deal seems too good to be true on high demand sold out tickets, it probably is.
  2. Use a credit or debit card to pay: these payment methods offer buyer protection. Avoid using a direct bank transfer, as these are harder to dispute.
  3. Always check if the website is secure: a web address should start with ‘https’ and have a padlock icon next to it. Scammers will often copy trusted websites to trick you.
  4. Stick to official sources: buy tickets from official sites or reputable ticket exchange sites. Buying tickets through social media can come with risks.
  5. Complete your Security Profile: head to the My Security Profile in the help section of your Mobile App. Here, you can set controls for your cards and find out about the latest scams.

How to spot ticket scams

Scammers use different ways to trick you into buying fake tickets. Here are the most common tactics:

  • Research: take the time to thoroughly research the tickets. If they are not on sale yet or have already sold out you should be suspicious.
  • Super low prices: be cautious of deals that seem too good to be true, as they may be a ploy to lure you in.
  • Contact information: genuine companies provide clear contact information. If you can't find an address, phone number, or email, it's a red flag.
  • Fake websites: be cautious of websites with slight variations in the link of well-known ticket booking sites. Avoid clicking on links, type the web address into your browser or search for it using a search engine.
