Malware threats

Top tips to stay safe

Malware is short for malicious software. It refers to any intrusive software developed to damage your computer or steal your personal information.

Follow our top tips to keep safe:

  1. Keep software updated: always update your computer's programs, like the operating system and antivirus software, to keep it secure.
  2. Use strong passwords:make your passwords strong by using a mix of letters, numbers, and special symbols.
  3. Be careful with emails: don’t open attachments or click on links from people you don’t know. This can prevent malware from getting on your computer.
  4. Install and maintain antivirus software: use trusted antivirus software to find and get rid of malware. Always make sure it’s running and up to date.
  5. Backup your data regularly:  save copies of important files on an external drive or online. This way, you can get your data back if your computer is hacked.

How do malware attacks happen?

  • Email links and attachments: criminals send fake emails with links or attachments. If you click on them, malware can get on your computer.
  • Downloading files: if you download free games or programs from untrustworthy websites, they might have malware in them.
  • Public Wi-Fi: using free Wi-Fi networks without a password can let hackers access your computer and put malware on it.
