How can I make an international payment?

Mobile banking

 

If you have registered to use your biometrics with the Bank, you can use the mobile app to make an international payment to new and saved payees up to the daily limit of £10,000.00 GBP (Euro equivalent for ROI).

If you have not yet registered your biometrics with the Bank you can make an international payment to:

  • a saved payee up to £10,000
  • a new payee up to £750 (a maximum of 5 payments totalling £750 per day)
  • to make a payment to a new payee for more than £1,000 you will need to go to Online Banking

 

Step by step instructions:

 

  1. Login to the mobile app
  2. Tap 'Payments' on the bottom of the home screen, make sure the account shown is set to the account where you want to make the payment from. You can swipe to change accounts or tap 'Change account'.
  3. Tap 'Send money'
  4. Tap 'Send money abroad'
  5. Tap 'Choose who to pay'
  6. Tap Pay someone new or an existing Payee set up
  7. Follow the on screen instructions to complete the payment

 

Pay Someone New selected

 

  1. Select country and then Currency
  2. Key the amount in either foreign currency or GBP as you prefer and select calculate rate
  3. Choose Payment type and Fees
  4. Input Recipient’s details (Payee’s full name/ Account details/Reference/Recipient’s bank details/Recipients address/Other details)
  5. Select purpose of payment, review messages and select continue
  6. If required, complete Biometric approval
  7. Check the payment details and Continue
  8. Review payment & select "Make Payment"
  9. Accept Terms & Conditions
  10. The screen will then confirm your payment has been arranged

 

Saved Payee selected

 

  1. Select Payee
  2. Key the amount in either foreign currency or GBP as you prefer and select calculate rate
  3. Choose Payment type and Fees
  4. Check Payment details
  5. Confirm payment
  6. The screen will then confirm your payment has been arranged

 

Online Banking

 

You can make international payments of up to £10,000 a day through Online Banking, please see How do I make an international payment using Online Banking?

For payments of more than £10,000 or if you don't use Online Banking, you can make the payment by visiting your branch.

If you are visiting a branch you will need to bring your debit card and some ID such as a driving license or passport to make the payment.

For a same day payment, you have until 2:00pm to arrange the payment (1:30pm for urgent transfers in euros to Europe).

If your payment is above £10,000 and you are unable to visit a branch then please complete either Sending a Payment to Europe (pdf, 274kb) or Sending a Payment Worldwide (pdf, 949kb) form.

If you are a Premier Banking customer, you can also make an international payment over the phone if you are enrolled for either Telephone Banking or Online Banking.

To send an international payment using our mobile app, you'll need to make the first payment using online banking. After this payment is made, you will be able to send funds to the international payee using the mobile app.

What you'll need

  • The latest version of the NatWest International mobile app
  • A personal current or savings bank account
  • The first payment must be made in online banking

Your step-by-step guide

  1. Login to the mobile app
  2. Select the account that you want to make the payment from
  3. Select 'Payments'
  4. Choose 'International payment'
  5. Select 'Make on international payment'
  6. Select 'Choose who to pay or pay someone new'
  7. Under 'Your payees', choose an existing payee
  8. Key the amount in either foreign currency or GBP
  9. Choose the payment date and advise the fees you want to pay
  10. Add a statement reference (optional)
  11. Check the payment details and select 'Initiate payment'

Make a payment using online banking

To create an international payee, make the initial payment to the recipient and the payee details will be available for future payments.

 

What you'll need

To approve an initial payment to a recipient you will require:

  • A personal current or savings bank account

and either:

 

Your step-by-step guide

  • Log in to online banking
  • Select 'Payments & transfers' from the main menu
  • Under 'International payments', choose 'Make an international payment'

 

Choose the account to send the money from

  • If you select 'Pay one of your saved payees': choose a recipient's name from the list and then the payee's currency
  •  If you select 'Pay someone new': select the country that you are sending money to from the list and the payee's currency
  • Enter the amount that you would like to send and choose which charges you wish to pay
  • Select 'Get exchange rate and charges' and review the quote

If you accept the quote, press 'Next'

 

Complete the payee’s details

If you are paying an existing payee these details will be pre-populated.

  • Payee's name
  • Payee's address
  • Account details

If the destination country uses International Bank Account Numbers (IBAN), please select 'IBAN & BIC'.

  • Bank Identifier Code (BIC): Also known as a SWIFT Code, Business Identifier Code or Bank International Code. A BIC is a globally recognised code that specifies which bank we need to send the money to. The code has either 8 or 11 characters.
  • IBAN: International Bank Account Number (IBAN) Banks use an IBAN to identify accounts for international payments made in Europe as well as some other countries. 

For other countries or if you don't know the IBAN number, please select 'Account number & BIC' or 'Account number & NCC'.

  • National Clearing Code (NCC): An NCC is needed for making a payments that don't have a SWIFT/BIC or IBAN code. They are also known as Routing Codes or Bank State Branch (BSB) codes for some countries (e.g. South Africa, Australia and New Zealand).

 

Complete the additional details

  • Reference for your statement
  • Message to payee
  • Purpose of payment code (Payments to Bahrain or United Arab Emirates require a code)

Select 'Next'

 

Review the payment details

  • Acknowledge you have read and accept the terms and conditions
  • Complete the security check to advise the reason for the payment

Confirm that you wish to continue and press 'Make payment'

 

If this is the first payment made to this recipient, you'll be asked to approve the payment using your card reader or using our mobile app if you have registered for biometric approval.
