How do I withdraw large amounts of cash
You can withdraw cash over the counter during our opening hours on Monday to Friday – though not on Saturdays. Find branch opening hours.
We’ll need some notice for larger amounts though:
- £5,000 - £19,999 – ideally, you’ll give us at least 24 hours’ notice (especially for specific denominations).
- Over £20,000 – you need to give us at least 3 business days’ notice, or we’ll have to decline your withdrawal.
You can do this in branch, or by calling our telephone banking line on 03457 242424 (or +44 131 5498888 from outside the UK).
We’re here 8am-8pm, 7 days a week, or you can use our automated service 24/7.
Making your withdrawal securely
Cash withdrawals are the least secure way of paying somebody, and we want to help protect our customers from fraud and scams.
When you visit one of our branches to make a cash withdrawal, we might take some extra steps to keep you safe and secure. As well as needing your Debit Card and PIN, we might:
- Ask to see secondary ID - like a driving licence or passport.
- Ask to see relevant paperwork - to show us why you’re making a payment. For example, if you’re paying for work on your home with cash, please bring an invoice.
- Ask extra questions – to find out more about your withdrawal. We may ask these questions in branch, and it can take up to 30 minutes. Even if you’ve given us advance notification, we may need your answers before we can authorise your withdrawal.
In some cases, we may choose to decline the cash withdrawal based on the information you’ve given us. This would only ever be in situations where we need to protect our customers because we have concerns about an account.
Does it need to be cash?
